Chelsea FC is one of the biggest and most successful football clubs in the world, and thus a suitable partner for PlayOnside
In May PlayOnside was invited by Chelsea Foundation to take part on a two day coaching training and seminar in Bangkok. Chelsea Foundation, a branch of the of the world famous Premier League Club is a worldwide foundation, operating in more than 150 locations in 15 different countries. Even though their approach differs a bit from PlayOnside’s, we share values of celebrating diversity, and promote equality.
Six members of the PlayOnside family travelled to Bangkok to take part of the coaching training. As expected, the Chelsea facilitates is an upgrade from our usual fields at Parami School, or Mae Tao Clinic, but the ball and the rules of the game are the same, and PlayOnside was eager to learn from the best.
The training consisted of observation of football training, discussion group, and feedback. We got to see how the Chelsea coaches prepare lessons, and how they implement different focus aspect during the practice. We learned about new methodologies regarding instructions, and guidance, and we had the opportunity to ask questions and to discuss different approaches. Chelsea Foundation work with children from 5 years of age, substantially younger than the average PlayOnside-player.
This group of age demands a different approach than older adolescents, with a much more play-based approach to the training. We recognized a similarity in the approach from how they implement trainings compared with how we normally do it, and this was a confirmation for us that we do things in the right way.
The Bangkok trip was a great success, and we were very happy for the invitation from Chelsea, and we look forward to working with the Foundation to further improve our program in the future.
